WHY DO WE NEED TO SLEEP?

As one sleep expert puts it:

“Sleep is one of the most important physiological ingredients that give us the capability to live our lives…we need sleep so we can function. Sleep plays a central role in so many things. These include the renewal and repair of our body’s tissues, our metabolism, our physical growth and development, our ability to fight infection, our learning skills and memory, and our ability to regulate our emotions.”
— Colin A. Espie (Journal of Sleep Research, 2021)

Yet, many of us only grasp the value of sleeping enough when we’re running on empty.

fanciful image of person sleeping on a bed in the clouds to indicate peaceful restful sleep

Sleep powers everything—heart health, immunity, mental clarity, reproductive health, and hormone balance. Miss a night or two, and you’re hit with irritability, anxiety, brain fog, and food cravings that can pack on pounds. Worse, chronic sleep loss sparks low-grade silent inflammation, a trigger for serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

The fix? Prioritize sleep. Do whatever is within your power to help you fall asleep and stay asleep until your body gets enough each night. It’s the simplest way to supercharge your health.

Interestingly enough, one of the most frequently reported benefits of sleeping grounded is improved sleep quality—a finding corroborated by Ghaly and Teplitz (2004), who showed that grounding during sleep normalizes cortisol levels. Cortisol, a critical stress hormone, disrupts sleep when chronically elevated. High cortisol levels are also linked to the development of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, insomnia, immune suppression, weight gain, and depression—conditions which are also worsened by persistent sleep deficits.

dog grounding by sleeping on a sandy beach

Grounding during sleep thus ranks among our top recommendations, with the potential to deliver additional benefits like reduced inflammation, alleviated pain, enhanced heart rate variability, improved blood viscosity (via zeta potential), and accelerated wound healing. Yet, even without grounding, quality sleep remains foundational to optimal health. This understanding underlies our introduction of the SAMINA sleep system. While the system offers an optional grounding component, the SAMINA bed alone stands as a robust sleep enhancer.

Hence, we’ve dedicated this page to it…

WHAT’s SO SPECIAL ABOUT SAMINA BEDS & BEDDING?

While staying at a hotel in Switzerland, Grounded.com Founder Step Sinatra had the opportunity to test out a SAMINA bed. Amazed at how deeply he slept on it, and acknowledging it’s superior quality, he was smitten. The fact that this particular SAMINA bed did NOT include a Lokosana grounding pad was especially intriguing to him….He knew that the bed itself - even when ungrounded - was a ticket to a fantastic night’s sleep.

UNPARALLELED QUALITY: ALL-NATURAL, NON-TOXIC MATERIALS & SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

close up of Samina solid wood bed frame and headboard

SAMINA bed frames are made by hand from solid, sustainably-sourced wood. They are also metal-free.

With mass consumerism and inexpensively-produced goods comes toxic compromises…most of today’s bed frames, mattresses and bedding are made using cheap shortcuts - toxic chemicals that can cost us our health. Mattresses - especially those with “memory” or polyurethane foam - often contain volatile organic compounds (a.k.a. “VOCs”) that off-gas at room temperature. This is why new mattresses often have a chemical smell.

Exposure to VOCs via inhalation can cause respiratory problems and, when exposure is chronic, increase cancer risk. Mattresses also tend to contain chemical flame retardants, which are also linked to cancer, as well as neurological and hormonal problems.

If your bed frame or other bedroom furniture is made of composite wood, it can release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, into the air. You don’t want to be breathing this toxic stuff in every night!

With SAMINA beds, you don’t have to worry about these risks.

Each bed frame is custom handmade with solid, sustainably-sourced (FSC certified) wood. The beautiful wood grain is unstained and unvarnished, enhanced only with an organic oil finish - no off-gassing of the wood or varnish. The frames can also be adjusted for inclined sleeping, which is linked to better sleep for some people - more on this functionality below.

The orthopedic slat frame, which fits inside the bed frame, is also made of solid ash wood - so, no off-gassing of that either.

Samina orthopedic slat frame with two layers of solid ash wood for optimal support of the body

SAMINA orthopedic slat frames have two layers of solid ash wood separated by natural rubber tubes for optimal support.

Flexible and durable, the ash wood slats easily bend and contour to the body, making them an ideal wood choice for back support.

Quality is a priority for the folks at SAMINA. Each solid wood slat is smoothed and the edges hand-rounded before being carefully inspected for imperfections and flaws.

Unlike most beds, which have one only slat frame layer, the SAMINA slat frame has top and bottom layers for optimal spine support. Instead of being fixed together with glue, the solid wood slats are separated with certified organic latex tubes for maximum flexibility and support.

The SAMINA orthopedic slat frame is actually a patented invention…It’s specifically built for spinal decompression and to relieve back pain, which can really get in the way of a good night’s sleep. More on this below…

And apparently, the wood slats can also withstand a good amount of movement and weight…

As for SAMINA’s mattress layers and bedding, they are also organic or 100% natural.

Instead of a mattress made with memory, polyerthane or latex foam, the SAMINA rubber mattress, which rests atop the orthopedic wood slatting, is made from organic latex. Providing support and comfort, this organic latex mattress is free of petroleum-based chemicals which can off-gas over time.

Derived from rubber tree sap, the talalay rubber is hypoallergenic, and GOLS-certified, which means no VOCs or chemical fire retardants. It’s also naturally mold-resistant, antibacterial, and antifungal.

Here’s the system again (sans solid-wood bed frame), for ease of reference. Although built for a SAMINA bed frame, this inner system can go in any bed frame. SAMINA is happy to work with you on that!

Next later is the Lokosana grounding pad, an optional add-on which lays between the rubber mattress and wool topper. Underneath the organic cotton surface are layers of virgin sheep’s wool, Swiss bio-magnets, and organic cotton fabric interwoven with pure silver threads to conduct Earth energy. The silver thread count is high (46%), which increases production cost; hence the Lokosana grounding pad is rather expensive. However, as with the other bed materials, you don’t have to worry about the VOC off-gassing, and because silver is also antimicrobial, it brings an added benefit to the table.

Like other indoor grounding devices, the Lokosana pad plugs into an electrical outlet to tap into the ground energy. However, unlike other grounding sleep devices we use and recommend, the Lokosana grounding mat is said to indirectly conduct ground energy into the body; that is, you don’t make direct skin contact with the conductive silver.

More on Lokosana grounding functionality below>

Lokosana Grounding Pad - goes atop the organic rubber mattress

Next layer is a mattress topper filled with 100% virgin, superfine brushed sheep’s wool. It lies atop the Lokosana grounding pad (or the natural rubber mattress if the Lokosana is not purchased). Ethically sourced and encased within certified organic cotton, this lanolin-rich wool is hypoallergenic and free of processing chemicals.

Highly breathable and absorbent, natural wool wicks away and disperses moisture from sweat, but without retaining a sweaty odor. Keeping moisture at bay is also important for preventing allergenic dust mites. This same property (known as hygroscopicity) is what makes the wool thermoregulatory - meaning, you don’t get too hot.

Wool is also very durable and outlasts other natural bedding materials such as down feathers.

The only disadvantage is that you can’t throw this wool topper or the Lokosana grounding pad in the washing machine. More on how to care for SAMINA products below.

Samina organic cotton duvets filled with virgin sheeps wool - four options available

Optional bedding add-ons include handmade, virgin wool duvets in various thicknesses which come enclosed within SAMINA’s proprietary Bio-Ceramic organic cotton; organic cotton duvet covers are sold separately.

As with other elements of this awesome bed, the Bio-Ceramic organic cotton provides additional sleep-enhancing functionality - more on this below.

Besides duvets, SAMINA offers ten types of pillows and a complete line of 100% organic cotton sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers. So you can sleep in total purity, softness and orthopedic comfort.

Most of SAMINA’s pillows are orthopedically designed, and contain natural rubber inserts surrounded by virgin sheep’s wool. They are enveloped within Bio-Ceramic organic cotton or traditional organic cotton.

One pillow even contains natural, Swiss stone, pine wood chips from organically cultivated trees. It’s like a giant, all-natural sachet for your bed with a comforting scent that, itself, might improve sleep quality!

Down to the last detail, SAMINA bed systems are all about getting the best possible night’s sleep…every night.

Because when your body’s not defending against chemical toxins, drenched in sweat or too hot, it’s easier to sink into a restorative sleep. Same with orthopedic structural supports - when pain signals are lessened or eliminated, you simply sleep better.

THE SAMINA BED IS ORTHOPEDICALLY DESIGNED FOR restorative sleep and pain PREVENTION

Queen sized Samina inclined bed with two orthopedic, flexible ash wood slat frames

Queen and king size beds are equipped with patented, side-by-side slat frames to meet individual orthopedic needs.

Besides its exceptional-quality craftsmanship and pristine materials, the SAMINA bed system also boasts a multifaceted, functional design.

The patented, orthopedic slat frame:

  • Is designed to optimally support the spine and body with not one, but two flexible slat layers, and thus enable relaxation and recuperation. By lessening stress on the back, spine and muscles, it ultimately reduces back pain for many people.

  • Queen and king size beds are equipped with side-by-side slat frames so that each person gets individual, customized support.

person outfitting Samina orthopedic slat frame with optional hip intensifiers

Optional Hip Intensifiers - natural rubber inserts - can provide extra support for those with low back pain or excess weight around the middle.

  • Each slat frame is modifiable to further personalize the level of support needed. The slats are removable and you can insert shoulder bolsters or hip-supportive rubber inserts to best support your particular body type. Such adaptations are examples of the degree of personalization you get with this unique bed system.

  • It’s worth mentioning that the open-air design of the slat frame helps prevent dust mites, mold, mildew and bacteria, which are commonly found in box springs. Less allergens = better sleep!

It’s amazing how much thought has gone into this slat frame alone!

As for the solid wood bed frame

  • It is not only beautiful, but adjustable for inclined sleeping. You can sleep on it flat, like a conventional bed, or manually adjust it to a 3.5 or 5 degree elevation with additional feet.

  • Why sleep at an incline? Studies have shown that elevating the head and upper body during sleep can improve breathing capability and reduce acid reflux symptoms, thus improving sleep for snorers (not to mention their bed mates) and people with GERD or heartburn.

  • Some doctors and biohackers also believe inclined sleeping can promote better circulation and brain health. More studies are needed

SAMINA beds can be slept on flat, like conventional beds, or manually adjusted for head and shoulder elevation.

The hypoallergenic, natural rubber mattress also offers more support for the back than regular mattresses. This is because natural Talalay latex is durable and retains its original shape after compression. It provides metal-free springiness without sagging (which can lead to back pain).

LOKOSANA GROUNDING PAD FUNCTIONALITY

As mentioned earlier, sleeping grounded is one of the best ways to improve your sleep quality, as it relaxes the body, improves cortisol levels and can relieve pain and inflammation.

My Lokosana grounding pad, folded in half (to fit in this picture!). It plugs into a three-prong outlet to access ground port energy.

Although SAMINA sleep systems are designed to promote restorative sleep without grounding the body, SAMINA offers the optional addition of their Lokosana grounding pad for inducing even greater relaxation and equilibrium. The Lokosana is actually certified as a medical device (CE) in accordance with strict EU standards, and recognized by Swissmedic for its ability to promote sleep and support the body’s natural regeneration processes.

Also integrated into the Lokosana pad are Swiss bio-magnets, which are thought to replicate the Earth’s natural magnetic field and ultimately help reorient your body in a way that improves sleep and overall well-being.

According to SAMINA, “The pad effectively has you sleeping in a head north – feet south position regardless of the position of your bed for optimal healthy sleep.”

As a plug-in grounding device, the Lokosana should also reduce body voltage induced by ambient EMFs emitted from plugged-in appliances and consumer electronics.

That said, the Lokosana pad works differently than any other grounding devices we’ve tried. The key difference is that you don’t make direct skin contact with the conductive elements (which are pure silver threads in the Lokosana). So it’s an indirect-contact grounding method.

cross section of Samina Lokosana grounding mat for bed

Here is a cross-section of the Lokosana grounding pad. On the bottom is virgin sheep’s wool, topped with a thin fabric layer of 46% pure silver and 54% organic cotton, then another layer of sheep’s wool. All are encased within organic cotton.

Unlike other grounding sheets and sleep mats, which touch your skin when you sleep, the Lokosana grounding pad lays beneath the wool mattress topper. You can place it on top of your bed and sleep directly on it (I do), but the silver threading is located in between layers of virgin sheep’s wool, which is then enclosed within an organic cotton cover.

According to Dr. Günther W. Amann-Jennson, the inventor of the SAMINA bed system, indirect-contact or contactless grounding works via the Capacitor Principle. So our understanding is that the Lokosana is almost like a battery that holds the Earth’s negative charge.

Neither Step nor I are electrical engineers or electrophysicists by any means...yet we have extensive knowledge of grounding products, applications and technology. However, the concept of indirect-contact grounding challenges the current ideology and we are currently delving into that aspect of this device. Full disclosure - we want to fully wrap our brains around this concept before discussing it further. We don’t know of any studies which explore the effects of contactless or indirect grounding. That said, we think contactless grounding is possible, but recognize the need to review more applicable scientific research.

Dr. Amann-Jennson further explained that you can prove the body has absorbed free electrons from the contactless grounding device by measuring a reduction of electrical charge in the body…because only an influx of electrons can reduce the charge in the body.

Everything Step or I recommend at Grounded.com is something we, ourselves, have used and found effective. Hence, Step and I both purchased a Lokosana grounding mat so that we could try one out for a few months. Each of us wants to see how we feel after sleeping on this particular grounding device for a while. Will our sleep improve? Will we feel same or similar effects as when grounding via direct skin contact?

Samina Lokosana grounding pad plugs into an electrical outlet to tap into ground port energy

The Lokosana Grounding Pad plugs into a three-prong electrical outlet to access ground port energy.

So far, we both report that the Lokosana materials feel wonderful to sleep on and we each tend to sleep better on this pad. I personally find myself wanting to crawl back in bed and lay on it when enjoying my morning coffee. It’s comforting, to say the least. I also love sleeping with the TV pillow SAMINA generously surprised me with - it’s filled with merino wool and covered in organic cotton.

Importantly, neither of us has measured our body voltage on and off the mat to verify that the contactless grounding mat reduces the electrical charge in our bodies.

While we plan to test such body voltage and show our results in an upcoming video, we think it is important for you to know this fact when making a decision about buying the Lokosana Grounding pad. We’re still in the trial phase and aren’t as experienced with Lokosana as we are with other grounding products. We’ll keep you posted!

BIO-CERAMIC ORGANIC COTTON FUNCTIONALITY

Perhaps the best kept secret to SAMINA’s sleep systems is the incorporation of far-infrared (“FIR”) therapy into the fabric which encases most SAMINA duvets, mattress covers and pillows.

If you enjoy basking in FIR saunas for the health benefits, you may be wondering, “how can bedding be infrared therapy?” I know I was when researching this optional feature of the SAMINA sleep system.

According to a 2022 study, “far-infrared (FIR) textiles are a new category of functional textiles that have presumptive health and wellbeing functionality.” The “high thermal efficiency materials are obtained by the usage of functional fibers with embedded far-infrared (FIR) bioceramic additives with heat storage/release capabilities…minerals… are introduced into fabrics that are primarily worn next to the skin (to reflect FIRs back to the body) in order to increase thermal effectiveness.”

SAMINA achieves FIR functionality via cutting-edge, “bio-ceramic” threading. Their bio-ceramic yarn is made by fusing select minerals and crystals (chosen for their particular frequencies) at very high temperatures, then coating organic cotton threads with the resulting liquid bio-ceramic mixture.

sauna with far infrared light therapy

Far Infrared Sauna

This bio-ceramic yarn is then interwoven with organic cotton to create SAMINA’s Bio-Ceramic organic cotton fabric, which covers much of their bedding. When the bio-ceramic fabric absorbs our body heat (itself, a form of infrared radiation), it re-emits, “through the mechanisms of convection and conduction” that heat back to us in the form of FIR energy. (Bertuccioli, A. et al.)

Samina pillow with orthopedic rubber insert and bioceramic organic cotton fabric for far infrared effects

SAMINA Delta orthopedic pillow with natural rubber core, wrapped in Bio-Ceramic organic cotton.

So how does bio-ceramic fabric benefit the body and help you sleep better? First, it is thermo-regulatory, and should keep you warm and comfy, so you don’t wake up throughout the night due to being too cold, too hot, or sweating profusely. FIR energy is also known to increase blood circulation, enhance metabolic rate, help eliminate metabolic toxins, and even bring about pain relief. Through one small study, researchers found that wearing a bio-ceramic shirt eight hours a day for sixty days resulted in a significant reduction of fibromyalgia pain for the participants.

It turns out that bio-ceramic clothing is also a bio-hack for improving athletic performance and enhancing recovery after sports activities. Former Patriots’ and Buccaneers’ Quarterback (as if the GOAT needs any introduction!), Tom Brady refers to the bio-ceramic pajamas he wears as “game-changing.”

Bio-ceramic fabric with FIR therapy is just one of the many elements that makes SAMINA’s sleep system extraordinary…along with its adjustable frame, orthopedically designed slat frame and mattress, and non-toxic, organic, premium-quality materials, it helps you wake up rested and recharged.

The SAMINA bed is truly a multifaceted system of biohacks for best-ever sleep…and thus better health!

WHO IS SAMINA?

In 1988, SAMINA Founder Austrian Psychologist Dr. Günther W. Amann-Jennson started treating his patients in an unusual way. Understanding that sleep is crucial for mental health, Amann-Jenson had an “aha moment” upon discovering that so many of his patients suffered from sleep deprivation. He became inspired to create a sleep system that would eliminate many causes of insomnia or poor-quality sleep, and ultimately improve mood, cognition and the ability to healthfully cope with stressors - all while also boosting physical health.

Dr. Amann-Jennson soon invented the orthopedic, double-layer, individualized slat frame, coupling it with a mattress and bedding system of pristine quality and purity. Over the years, he has continued to upgrade this luxury sleep system with state-of-the-art options like bio-ceramic fabric and the Lokosana grounding pad. (To say that he’s a brilliant guy is an understatement - that’s my opinion, at least, after exploring his patents, reading his educational materials and learning the intricacies of the SAMINA bed system.)

Step with Claus and Denise Pummer at the June 2024 Health Optimization Summit in London

Several years later, Dr. Amann-Jennson teamed up with Claus Pummer, Founder of a lifestyle furnishings company called Natural by Design, Corp. Trained as a master carpenter, Claus innovated SAMINA’s Pummer line of solid-wood, metal-free, adjustable bed frames, as well as SAMINA’s exemplary-quality nightstands and bedside tables. Claus and his wife, Denise Pummer, are the exclusive importers of SAMINA products in North America.

Obsessed with optimal sleep, the Pummers provide expert concierge service and are happy to help you customize the perfect SAMINA sleep system, or elements thereof, for your individual needs and budget. They can even make SAMINA systems for boats, RVs and planes!

They’ve been a pleasure to work with to obtain our Lokosana grounding pads, and Step and I each look forward to investing in an entire SAMINA sleep system in the near future.

(I’m personally waiting until I’m living in a more permanent location...hopefully Hawaii. Solid wood bed frames are inconvenient to move, especially across an ocean. Step is rather nomadic, currently in Greece, so he also has yet to purchase one for the same reason. I know each of us will when the time is right. Quality sleep is too important!)

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SAMINA BED AND BEDDING

DO’s:

  • Cover your SAMINA Wool Mattress Topper, duvets and pillows with machine-washable, organic cotton sheets, etc. to help protect them. SAMINA also offers 100% organic cotton, washable mattress topper covers.

  • Spot-clean your SAMINA Wool Mattress Topper and/or Lokosana Grounding Pad as needed with a diluted organic cleaner (such as Dr. Bronner’s or MyGreenFills).

  • Air out the entire system from time to time - gently shake duvets and wool toppers and, if possible, set them outside for a few hours in fresh air.

  • Turn each bed layer - including the slat frame - over about four times per year and switch sides, especially if one sleeper is significantly heavier than the other.

DON’Ts:

  • Dry-clean your SAMINA bedding - it can get damaged by harmful chemicals and compromise its purity.

  • Machine-wash SAMINA mattress toppers, Lokosana pad, duvets or pillows; the natural properties of the materials can be destroyed.

  • Don’t air the natural rubber mattress or natural rubber pillow cores out in direct sunlight, as it can damage the rubber.

  • Don’t “make your bed” every day - instead, move the duvet to the foot of the bed so that the the pillows and wool topper can regularly air out.
